Runway Spotlight: Valentino

Paris Fashion Week | Paris

Spotlighting a favorite from SpringSummer 2013:

At Valentino, what the audience might have expected (which is what clients and fans alike love): long and short slip dresses, chiffon sleeves, lace insets, guipure, and eye-catching beading and embroidery. Lace for daytime and evening occasions had a resurgence into next season.

The palette was sober for spring and the design house; mostly black and white and cream and blush, relieved most noticeably by the obligatory Valentino red. There was a scarlet leather trench coat – spectacular in color and simplicity – and a crimson short-sleeved jumpsuit with roots in the Seventies. Patterns were scarce. And the evening dresses, even one with a deeply plunging neckline and long slits, were ladylike.

The overall impression of the collection was of softly-stated elegance. Lovely? Without question. Yet it bordered on the predictable. The design house knows what works best for them- marketable, yes. | Katja Anderson
